Presentations, quizzes, diagnosis and wordlists

We start off the lesson  by going through a powerpoint presentation for the Trade Fair (Yrkesmässa) tomorrow.
It will take about 10 minutes. The presentation is in Swedish but I will make comments in English.

Today we have our second quiz of the term.
The quiz is a great way to learn new words in a sentence/phrase.

Write up any new words on your list...

Four people have already sent this week's list. The rest of you need to send it by Friday

Ms. Walsh has recommended a diagnosis to know what level you are at.

Here is the link.

After you have done the diagnosis give me your result and then scroll down to all the great resources which are available.

Finally, most of you need to share a wordlist with me.

Remember
Include your name and week number in the TITLE OF THE DOCUMENT

Homework
1. Wordlist

2. Complete the exercises in the "Happy" workbook

Monday 24 September 2018

Clarification about homework

To clarify. Your homework is ALWAYS to do a wordlist with 25 new words and sentences in English. You do this on UNEVEN weeks (week 39, 41, 43 etc).
Otherwise you follow the instructions on the blog. Sometimes you have reading assignments (from Happy or other texts) AS YOU DID until last Wednesday, or writing assignments. This Wednesday I will give you a writing assignment to do based on your text in "Happy"

Aim of the lesson
1. To finish off the exercise from the Happy Workbook.
Make sure you READ the text you have chosen. (B or C)
Why not write up any new words for this week.

Then in the workbook answer exercise 1, 2 and 3 for your respective text.

Good luck!

2. We will also practise listening ( an exercise from Randall's ESL-Lab)

and a speaking exercise based on it

Listening
Here is the link to the listening exercise.

  • Work on your own
  • Do the pre-listening exercise
  • Listen to the text and answer the questions
  • Do one (1) vocabulary activity (Any new words?)
  • Then talk to a friend by doing the post- listening exercise (speaking)

Time over?

You can discuss in pairs OR small groups the discussion topics in Happy for text B or C

Exercise 5 on page 17 for text B

Exercise 5 on page 19 for text C

It is important to speak as much English as possible.

Wednesday 19 September 2018

Going through the grammar, quiz and working on your text

Today we start off by going through your grammar diagnosis.

Fill in the table on the back page. One cross next to the number where you have a mistake. Fill in for all your mistakes.

Then we will go through the diagnosis passing through the class.

Time for our first quiz. The theme is democracy and human rights. As usual there are questions about sports and entertainment.

After that it is time to work on your text from the Happy book.

Make sure you READ the text you have chosen.
Why not write up any new words for next week.

Then in the workbook answer exercise 1, 2 and 3 for your respective text.

Good luck!

Monday 17 September 2018

Give me your grammar granma!

Today we  are going to start off by doing a grammar diagnosis.

If you know the grammar you can produce ACCURATE language. If you don't know it YOU CAN'T!!!

Do the diagnosis. Then we will exchange papers and you will correct for each other.

Hand in the booklets to Mike so I can see what areas of grammar we need to work most on

At the end of the lesson today you need to choose which of the "family" texts you are going to study-
B text
Two teenage girls aged 15 & 14 from India talk about their lives and family relationships- especially arranged marriages.

Here is a clip of young people talking about this

C Text
The situation was desperate in England in the middle of the 1800s. This text tells the story of Dr. Thomas Barnardo and how he helped hundreds of street kids who were in London at that time

Decide by the end of the lesson and let me know your choice.

It is the same if I choose a friend, listen to music or put on my favourite clothes. They always come with their ideas.

What am I going to do?

Family matters!

Hi everyone!
First of all. I hope you have covered your textbook!!! Not yet!! Well, you have until Wednesday. After that I will be writing home and asking THEM to fix it!!!!  Well, It's all about family :-)

Today we want to get you to start speaking some English.
Talk to a friend about your week-end.
Name 3 things you did with your family and 3 things you did with your friends (if any)

My family
What rules do you have in your family?
What special traditions do you have?

Today we are going to meet Anna.
She will tell you about her family?
Email me some information about three people in her family.

Now let's look at the Happy book

Everyone needs to study the introductory texts to each unit.
In this case the following texts are compulsory (obligatoriska):

  • Let's talk family
  • Mother and daughter
  • What are your parents like
So write down all the new words on your digital wordlist. The first list is now on Wednesday. Then it will be every other week.
It is very important that you put the words in phrases or sentences (meningar)

Today I will go through some of the words with you:-

First:- Let's talk family
Then: Mother and daughter

On Wednesday I want you to go through the text
"What are your parents like?" You can read the text before Wednesday as a part of your 20 minute reading.

Time to spare?
In the workbook do exercise 1 & 2 on page 4!

We will have some "Happy Talk" today.
Here is a little video clip on the same topic.

ALWAYS have earphones/headset with you in class!

The video clips with lyrics (Sångtext) are to help you improve (förbättra) your vocabulary. ALWAYS WRITE DOWN ANY NEW WORDS  in a sentence or phrase. Your first list should be sent or shared with me by next Wednesday!

The theme of the first text is "family"
Mike will give you some discussion questions to talk about 2 x 2. As usual, write down any new words and put them in a sentence/phrase.

Now read the text on page 4. There is a little "twist" (knorr) at the end of the text. What is it?

Now practise the dialogue with a friend. One of you is Pam and the other is Jenny. Change roles.

Compare with the original recording that Mike will play. Were there any problems with your pronunciation (uttal)?

You should have enough time to do the exercises on the first page of the workbook- exercises 1 & 2  on page 4.

HOMEWORK- Wordlist by next Wednesday
